Equity: A Union for Pole Performers

HAVE YOU HEARD? EQUITY IS RECRUITING POLE DANCERS!
A group of the country’s leading Pole Dancers and Pole Dance Fitness Teachers approached the performers’ Trade Union, Equity - and the result has been that Equity has agreed to become (as Steve Penney, joint organizer of “Miss Pole Dance 2008” says) “the pole dancers’ union rather than other ‘unofficial’ organisations that have come (and gone)” Steve also thinks that “Equity is best placed to take on the lead role with this.”
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
When you are performing or teaching, you get FREE Public Liability Insurance up to £10,000,000, FREE Accident Cover of up to £125 a week when you can’t work through injury, FREE Legal Advice and Support, FREE support through the Dancers’ Passport when you are working in Europe, contracts to protect you and your audience, FREE backstage insurance cover, a special medical insurance to get you immediate private medical cover if you injure yourself (for an extra £10.50 a year) - and lots more.
BUT ISN’T IT TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE?
Basic rate membership costs just over £100 per year - just under if you pay by Direct Debit - but the benefits and insurances (some of which you have to have in order to work) would cost you more than £500 per year - so it really is Value For Money!
BUT ISN’T IT HARD TO JOIN?
No! There are lots of myths about joining Equity! Quite simply, if you are a professional Pole Dancer you are INVITED to join the Union. We want you as members! The membership application form may look a little daunting, but for confidential advice about how to join, please feel free to write to, ring or e-mail the Equity Councillor who has been appointed to be the Council’s representative on the Pole Dance Working Party. He is Michael Branwell and he used to be a dancer (but not, unfortunately, a Pole Dancer). His address is 7, Home Close, Harlow, Essex CM20 3PD and his e-mail is harlow.ballet@ntlworld.com. You can reach him by phone on 01279 639170 : if he is not there, please leave a message on the answerphone, or with his wife Henrietta.
COME AND JOIN US - EQUITY WANTS POLE DANCERS AS MEMBERS
POLE DANCERS NEED THE PROTECTION OF EQUITY
There are lots of Federations out there trying to get you to join but remember Equity is already a well established and respected union which remains impartial and is not allied to any other business interests. It is purely in the interest of performers, therefore it is best positioned to truly serve those who perform pole dance and other related forms of dance.
MISS POLE DANCE and POLE PASSION FULLY SUPPORT EQUITY
You should too!
